Chadwyck-Healey Editorial Statement:
The Eighteenth-Century Fiction
database contains works in English prose from the period 1700 to 1780, by
writers from the British Isles. Each text is reproduced in full, including
all prefatory matter and annotation by the original author. Bibliographic
details, illustrations and errata lists are included from each of the
editions used. In general, first editions of texts were used. In certain
cases a later edition was judged more suitable. A few works, such as
Clarissa, have been reproduced twice in different editions, to allow
for extensive authorial revisions. The first London edition of Tristram
Shandy is included in both a fully searchable text version and in
scanned image form, to capture all of its visual idiosyncrasies.
