Abstract: | Physicist and chemist Robert S. Mulliken served on the faculty of the University of Chicago's departments of physics and chemistry from 1928 to 1985. His foundational research on chemical bonds and the electronic structure of molecules led to his 1966 Nobel Prize in chemistry. This collection consists of Mulliken's collection of scientific offprints, as well as a variety of photocopies, letters and cross reference sheets. |

Robert Sanderson Mulliken, Nobel Prize-winning physicist and chemist, was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts on June 7, 1896. He earned a B.Sc. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1917, and a Ph.D. from University of Chicago in 1921. He served on the faculty of New York University's physics department for a short time, before returning to the University of Chicago in 1928. He served as a professor of physics and chemistry for over 50 years. His foundational research on chemical bonds and the electronic structure of molecules led to his 1966 Nobel Prize in chemistry.

This collection consists of Mulliken's collection of scientific offprints, as well as a variety of photocopies, letters and cross reference sheets.
Mulliken’s original organization has been retained. The materials are arranged topically, with headings designated by Mulliken. Mulliken also assigned a number to each descriptive heading. The numbers are included here, in parentheses preceding each descriptive heading. The numbering of headings is not always sequential, and the sequence of descriptive headings is often obscure. Within each descriptive heading, the arrangement of files is generally alphabetical.
