| Abstract: | Sidney F. Huttner (1941-) was educated and employed at the University of Chicago as an undergraduate Admissions & Aid Officer, undergraduate Resident Head, and Special Collections staff member. He also worked in Special Collections at Syracuse University, the University of Tulsa, and the University of Iowa. This collection includes materials related to Huttner’s education and career, as well as his personal and professional correspondence. Materials date between 1936 and 2021, with the bulk of materials dating between 1961 and 1999. |
The collection is open for research with the exception of material in Series III. This series contains materials related to staffing and funding in the University of Chicago Library’s Special Collections Department, which are restricted for 50 years from the date of record creation. Also included in this series are documents from Huttner’s employment in the University of Chicago’s Office of Admissions and his letters of recommendation, which are restricted for 80 years from the date of record creation.

Sidney F. (“Sid”) Huttner was born in North Dakota in 1941. He attended elementary school in Flaxton, North Dakota until 1956, when his family moved to Spokane, Washington. Huttner graduated from Lewis & Clark High School in Spokane in 1959. He completed a bachelor’s degree in Tutorial Studies in 1963 at the University of Chicago. That same year, Huttner began a graduate program at Stanford University as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, but did not complete the degree. In 1964, he returned to Chicago to work as a College Admissions & Aid Officer at the University of Chicago, where he also completed a master’s degree in Philosophy 1969. Huttner served as an undergraduate Resident Head for Henderson House from 1968 to 1980 and worked in the Library’s Special Collections Department from 1970 to 1980. Subsequently, he worked in Special Collections at three university libraries: Syracuse University (1980-1984), the University of Tulsa (1984-1998), and the University of Iowa (1999-2012).
Sidney Huttner married Elizabeth (Betty) Stege in 1981, who completed a master’s degree in British History in 1974. Together Elizabeth and Sidney also worked and published in the rare books and bookbinding trades. They currently reside in Iowa City, Iowa.
The Sidney F. Huttner Papers are organized into three series: Series I, Education and Professional Life; Series II: Correspondence; and Series III: Restricted.
Series I, Education and Professional Life, is divided into two subseries and organized roughly chronologically.
Subseries I, Education, contains documents related to Huttner’s high school, undergraduate, and graduate studies.
Subseries II, Employment, contains materials from Huttner’s employment at the University of Chicago as an undergraduate Admissions & Aid Officer, undergraduate Resident Head, and Special Collections staff member. Also included in this subseries are materials related to Huttner’s work in Special Collections at Syracuse University, the University of Tulsa, and the University of Iowa.
Series II, Correspondence, organized alphabetically by correspondent, contains Huttner’s personal and professional correspondence from 1952 to 2021.
