Abstract: | Dr. Harvey Casson (b. January 21, 1922, d. March 15, 2009) was a nuclear physicist and participant of the Manhattan Project that ultimately led to the first successful atomic bomb. His career at the Argonne National Laboratory spanned over 30 years. Included in this collection are collected articles, booklets, manuals and reports of early atomic technology. The collection would be of interest to researchers and scholars of the history of atomic science including scholars particularly interested in the United States government’s atomic interest in alternative uses for radiation and atomic energy. |
The collection is open for research.

Dr. Harvey Casson (b. January 21, 1922, d. March 15, 2009) was a physicist and atomic scientist. Born in 1922 in Brooklyn, New York, he graduated from Brooklyn College in 1942. Afterwards, he enrolled in graduate school at the University of Chicago, where he earned a PhD degree in Physics in 1952. In 1952, he married Dr. Sophie Markarian, an alumna of the University of Chicago. During his time at the University of Chicago, Casson participated in the Manhattan Project that developed the first successful atomic bomb. Following his graduation, he started his research career in Argonne National Laboratory, which continued for over 30 years. On March 15, 2009, he died in Moraga, California, at the age of 87.
The collection is organized into three series. Series I: Personal; Series II: Subject Files; Series III: Oversize.
Series I, Personal, contains Casson’s personal documents, such as his business cards. Special mention should be made of a photocopy of the certificate he received for his participation in the Manhattan Project.
Series II, Subject Files, consists of various sets of booklets and manuals that Casson obtained throughout his studies and research career. Materials published by the US Atomic Energy Commission and those focusing on radiation protection document the US government’s and Casson’s scientific interests as well as his use of computers in his research. Finally, Argonne National Laboratory is represented in this series by newsletters, manuals, and photographs, as well as scientific drawings in Series III.
Series III, Oversize, consists of two scientific drawings created at Argonne National Laboratory.
