This publication was produced as a "picture story of the construction of
Chicago's First Subway." It begins with a letter from Chicago Mayor
Edward J. Kelly, written on October 16, 1943, the opening day of the
Chicago subway system. The publication also includes a description of
the "Five Star Features": ventilation, signals, illumination, drainage
and escalators. The caption for the photographs below begins with
"utility and beauty are blended in the modern design of mezzanine
stations."
