This is one of a set of three tiny, red pocket dictionaries that were designed to indeed be kept in one’s pocket. The spacing, of course, leaves little room for any sort of grammatical explanations or nuanced definitions.

Lu, Guang-cheng [盧廣誠]. 台灣閩南語概要 [An Outline of Taiwanese Hokkien]. Excellent condition. Taipei: 南天書局 [SMC Publishers], 2003. Taiwanese Hokkien was banned under the Cold War government; the flourishing of its linguistic study has only taken place over the last 20 years or so, and this seems to be one of the major works that set it off. I acquired it while living in Taiwan. It was one of the first books to use a more standardized character set for Taiwanese that differs from Mandarin (a set that has only recently begun to be taught in Taiwan by the Ministry of Education).

Mao, Huiqing (茅慧青), and Huiwan Jiang (江慧婉). 基礎外語：俄語篇 [Elementary Foreign Languages: Russian Edition]. Excellent condition. Taipei: National Chengchi University Press, 2014. The Mandarin-speaking learner has an uphill battle with Russian, which even for speakers of English, another Indo-European language, is already quite a steep slope. We are able to understand the concept of noun declensions somewhat via our the distinctions between he/him, I/me, they/them, etc. Sinitic languages lack this entirely; compared with the Russian textbooks I once used, this one spends massive amounts of time explaining case endings.

Richards, I. A., Italo Evangelista, and Christine Gibson. Italian through Pictures, Book 1. New York: Washington Square Press, 1960. An apparent revolt against the rigidity of most language textbooks of the era, this one opts instead to completely eschew words for black and white, cartoonish illustrations. This works for some things well enough, but descends into a picture-guessing game towards the end (I can’t even imagine what book two would look like). Good condition.

Riggs, Stephen R. Dakota Grammar. St. Paul, MN: Minnesota Historical Society Press, 2004. First published 1893 by Department of the Interior. Excellent condition. This is one of the earlier books in my collection, and like many Native American grammars, was written by a missionary. It is fascinating not only in its linguistic content, but also the rich cultural background provided via the stories and legends Riggs recorded—evidently for the first time in writing—of the Dakota people he lived with for so long.
