One of the earliest subjects of autobiographical comics and zines is mental health, as creators courageously approach an often stigmatizing and shameful topic that may negatively affect the way that they are seen including in the workplace. Creatively utilizing the interplay of image and text, these artists endeavor to represent their inner state of being in ways that communicate a profoundly individual experience to a wider audience. A strength of comics is their ability to simultaneously express multiple feelings and self-perceptions, while visually expressing emotions and feelings.
