Rocky (Urak’i)
The Korean Student Federation of North America published its official Korean-language periodical Rocky (Urak’i) between 1925-1936. Interestingly, the magazine’s editors selected the name Rocky for three reasons. Firstly, they felt it would best express the spirit of the Korean Student Federation by naming the publication after the Rocky Mountains, seen as the spine of the North American continent. Secondly, as a mountain range notorious for its many crags, the name expresses the difficult journey of Korean students in North America. And, finally, the name was a way for students to affirm their admiration for a spirit of purity, majesty, and endurance like that of the Rocky Mountains.
