National Institutes of Health (NIH)
In the early 1950s, Kirsner collaborated with Dean Lowell T. Coggeshall to establish and develop the General Medicine Study section of the NIH. Their goal was to sponsor and support research within the medical community, specifically in the gastrointestinal field. For decades, this group has processed grant applications and has helped fund hundreds of research projects that have furthered medical knowledge. The NIH even supports the Joseph B. Kirsner Center for the Study of Digestive Diseases by providing a grant for almost 20 years that supports the training of multiple fellows each year.
