Carlsbad Cavern

J. Harlan Bret, a geologist at the University of Chicago from 1914-1947, was interested in the formation of caves, particularly limestone caves. Bret’s studied caves in Missouri including Mammoth Cave, and in other parts of the country, such as Carlsbad Cavern. He made substantial contributions to the geological study of limestone caverns. He also advanced the theory that caves were the result of water circulating underground, below the water table.
