Switzerland, Germany, and Austria

Basel, Switzerland

Julian lived in Basel based on his fellowship appointment at research laboratory at the University of Basel, Switzerland, but he visited his family in Paris often, and Eva visited him in Basel. While Julian enjoyed his work for the most part, he did not find the city of Basel very exciting, and in a letter to Eva, he wrote about the curiosity from people in his apartment and laboratory about his appearance.

“Not that they are prejudiced or that I am “passing” but it creates a lot of curiosity which is painful to me.” - Julian H. Lewis, MD, PhD to Eva Overton Lewis
