Eva Overton Lewis
Eva earned her Associate of Arts degree in 1915 and her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1916. As a University of Chicago student, Eva took several language classes including Latin, Greek, French, and German, as well as classes in history, ethics, and psychology.
Eva was a charter member of the University of Chicago’s Beta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) sorority in 1913 and later a charter member of Theta Omega, the graduate chapter of AKA in 1922. Eva’s time at the University of Chicago overlapped with that of Georgiana Simpson. Along with Eva, Simpson (A.B. 1911, Ph.D 1921) was a graduate member of the Beta chapter of AKA. Simpson was a German language and literature scholar and the first African American woman to earn a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago. At a 6th Annual AKA Boule in 1923, Georgiana’s name is written on Eva’s minutes book, and it is also written on the back of a 1924 AKA banquet menu.
