General Summary:
The Herbert Zar Post-Baccalaureate Fellow works closely with the GIS Librarian in the Center for Digital Scholarship to enhance and implement the Library’s GIS initiatives. This position offers an exciting opportunity to promote spatial data literacy across campus by developing workshops, tutorials, and other educational resources for our active research community. The fellow will also play a vital role in coordinating instruction and community engagement efforts associated with the Mapping Chicagoland digital project.
As a member of the Center, the fellow will participate in team discussions and outreach events. Professional development opportunities are built into the role with opportunities to work with and learn from a multidisciplinary team with expertise in spatial analysis, data visualization, digital collections and project, research data management and sharing, and scholarly communications.
Center for Digital Scholarship at UChicago Library Summary:
The Center for Digital Scholarship connects students and faculty to digital tools for research. As a hub for research and collaboration, we provide essential resources to scholars, researchers, and students at the intersection of technology and academia. These resources encompass consultation and services on digital tools, data analysis and visualization, text and data mining, as well as digital publishing and archiving. Through workshops and events, CDS fosters knowledge sharing and skill development, empowering users to leverage digital methods effectively in their research and facilitating the dissemination of scholarship and data produced by the University community.
Duties:
- Assist users with acquiring, manipulating, and querying geospatial data
- Offer guidance on GIS best practices and methodologies for research projects
- Refine existing geospatial guidance documents and develop new educational resources
- Support mapping and analysis work associated with active digital scholarship projects
- Participate in outreach activities to promote GIS services
- Participate in team discussions and outreach events
- Engage in professional development opportunities with Center and Library staff
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated proficiency with GIS software (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS) and techniques
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Recent bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
Hours and Schedule:
1-year term appointment, 37.5 hours per week
Stipend:
$50,000
