East Asian Bibliography Fellow

Division/Department: East Asian Collection, University of Chicago Library

Fellowship coordinator: Jee-Young Park, Korean Studies Librarian

General Summary:

This project identifies East Asian periodicals of colonial Korea from 1900 to 1945 and compiles them into a comprehensive bibliography. Through data compilation, organization, and research, the bibliography outlines each serial’s identifying information, including region of origin, bibliographic details of publication, regions of distribution, and current accessibility status. Additionally, through textual interpretation, the bibliography provides commentary on the historical significance of each serial within its respective subject area. Thus, the bibliography serves as a comprehensive digital reference tool to access and utilize primary source materials on literature, history, economics, and politics, all of which provide crucial insight into the complexities of the colonial era in Korea (1910-1945). The desired outcome of the project is to address the difficulties which students encounter in finding and acquiring materials, including unfamiliarity with reading both basic cataloging information and primary language sources in Korean, Japanese, and Chinese, and a lack of knowledge about how to locate holding institutions when desired materials must be requested through Interlibrary Loan. At the same time, the bibliography is designed to facilitate innovative approaches to scholarship on print media during the era of colonial imperialism in East Asia.
