Work Schedule: 12-15 hours per week on a fixed schedule

Student positions at the University of Chicago Library are available only to University of Chicago students.

General Summary

This position will be providing basic information services at the Regenstein Library Circulation and Reserves desk. The employee will be responsible for helping library users in person and online via the Ask a Librarian service. Service hours are Sundays 2:00 – 8:00 p.m., Mondays – Thursdays, 4:00 – 8:00 p.m., Fridays 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., and Saturdays 12:00-4:00 p.m.

Essential Functions

  • Providing basic information services, such as directing individuals to Library Research Guides or finding items using the Library Catalog.
  • Answering online questions received via the Library’s Ask a Librarian chat and email service, triaging in-depth research questions to the appropriate unit or librarian.
  • Assisting users in submitting Scan and Deliver and Interlibrary Loan requests, locating call numbers for reserve items, and using the Library’s self-checkout stations.
  • Helping users schedule an appointment with a librarian.
  • Referring circulation and account questions to Circulation staff and supervisors.
  • Orienting new users to library spaces and services.
  • Assisting individuals having trouble finding books in the stacks or reading rooms.
  • Teaching individuals how to use the Library’s microfilm readers and troubleshooting the Library’s multifunction printer/copiers when support staff are unavailable.
  • Helping patrons log into public computers, creating login credentials for guests, and reporting computing issues to the Library’s Administrative and Desktop Support Services.
  • In consultation with the circulation supervisor on duty, reporting patron issues and concerns to the appropriate units or staff members.
  • Recording statistics on services provided for assessment purposes.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Qualifications

  • Must be a Graduate Student
  • Familiarity with University of Chicago Library services and spaces.
  • Strong communication and/or customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently and reliably
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff in other departments
  • Willingness to learn new skills and reach out for assistance when needed
  • Library or customer service experience preferred
