Resource Spotlight: Online news sources

The Library now provides online access to the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, The Atlantic, and The Economist

Welcome back! While you were away for the summer, the Library added online access to multiple news sources. Many of them require registration or the creation of an online account in order to take advantage of the Library's subscription, but once you've done that, you can use the subscription off campus. This post summarizes the steps you'll need to take to access these news sources, and this guide has further details.

The New York Times online access

To access The New York Times online for the first time, go to this link (not the New York Times site!) and create an account. Once you've created an account, you can then access the Times by logging into your account at https://www.nytimes.com/ or log into the NYT iOS or Android apps.

Sorry, Cooking and Games are not included in the Library's subscription. However, you do get access to Times Machine and the entire archive.

The Wall Street Journal online access

The Wall Street Journal's sign-up process is just like the New York Times': the first time you access the subscription, go to this link and create an account. The next time you visit, you can go to https://www.wsj.com/ or log in via the mobile apps on iOS or Android.

The Washington Post online access

The Washington Post's online access process is slightly more complicated than either the Times or the WSJ. The first time you access the WaPo, you click on this link and enter your UChicago email address. You will receive an activation e-mail with a button that will both verify your email address and activate your subscription access. Users with existing accounts can still verify their email through My Post and activate their subscription through the verification. Once an account has been created, log into your new account at https://www.washingtonpost.com or log into the Washington Post mobile app on Android and iOS devices.

The Atlantic online access

To access the online version of The Atlantic, see this post for instructions.

The Economist online access

To access The Economist, first read the instructions here. You'll need to go to https://www.economist.com/ and click on "Log In" in the upper right corner. That will take you to a registration page. Enter your UChicago email in the email field and hit enter; a popup will come up redirecting you to the Okta sign-in page. You will now be able to access The Economist off-campus using your CNET credentials and cVPN, as well as the Economist mobile apps.
