November 2024 D'Angelo Law Library Emerging Technologies Update
Lexis+ AI Mobile App
Lexis has released a Lexis+ AI Mobile app. It allows users to access the “ask a legal question,” “generate a draft,” and “summarize a case” functions of Lexis + AI on the go. It does not include the ability to upload documents. The app works with academic Lexis accounts. It is available on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
Box AI
The Box AI feature has been activated for UChicago students, faculty, and staff who use Box for file storage and access. It can be activated from Box’s web interface by clicking this button in the upper right-hand corner:
Features of Box AI include:
- Intelligent Search: Utilize Box AI to quickly find relevant files, folders, or specific content within your documents.
- Content Classification: Box AI can automatically classify and tag your files based on their content, making it easier to organize and locate information.
- Predictive Insights: Box AI can identify patterns, trends, and anomalies within your documents, so you can get helpful insights without needing to analyze everything manually.
- Workflow Automation: Automate repetitive tasks such as file routing or approval processes using custom-built workflows.
Breaking Bad Briefs: A Snapshot of Lawyers, Litigants, and Experts’ Use (and Misuse) of GenAI in Court Filings
Professor Heidi K. Brown of New York Law School has published an article surveying thirty-four cases in which a litigant or lawyer has submitted court documents containing fake case law or unreliable generative AI output. The cases discussed emphasize the need for lawyers using generative AI to understand the limits of the tools they use, verify the information they receive from generative AI, carefully review rules and standing orders on AI use, and be scrupulously honest when responding to inquiries from courts about the use of generative AI.
