Gramophone Recordings from the Linguistic Survey of India

For historians, the recordings are an aspect of what the late University of Chicago professor Bernard Cohn described as the creation of “colonial forms of knowledge”. Among the many benefits for linguists are insights into the historic forms of a number of less commonly spoken Indic languages. For students of music the recordings also include historic instances of less widely performed genres and a few instances of renowned artists.
