Glee, Mandolin, and Banjo Clubs

During the later part of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century, glee clubs were very popular on university and college campuses, as were their lesser-known counterparts: clubs for mandolin, banjo, and (occasionally) guitar.

Information about the University of Chicago’s glee, mandolin, and banjo clubs for both men and women can be found in several collections, including the General Archival Files (which include programs for performances) and the University’s yearbooks, The Cap and Gown (which include photos).
