Historical Note

South Side Community Art Center (SSCAC) was founded in 1940 by a group of Chicago-based Black artists. SSCAC was supported by the Federal Art Project. It is the oldest Black art center in the United States, and it is a community-oriented space that promotes and preserves Black art. SSCAC is located in the Chicago neighborhood of Bronzeville and it is the only Federal Art Project center to remain in its original building.
