Historical Note

Spektral Quartet was a string quartet based in Chicago comprising Clara Lyon (violin), Theo Espy (violin), Doyle Armbrust (viola) and Russell Rolen (cello). The ensemble was founded in 2010 and was active until 2022. During this time, they served as the ensemble-in-residence at the University of Chicago's Department of Music from 2012 to 2018 and performed at institutions such as the American Academy (Rome), Miller Theater, Library of Congress, Kennedy Center, Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), NPR Tiny Desk Concerts, Hyde Park Jazz Festival, The Adler Planetarium, Denver Friends of Chamber Music, Reykjavik Arts Festival, Cal Performances, and Art Institute of Chicago. Their commissions span composers such as George Lewis, Hans Thomalla, Augusta Read Thomas, Bernard Rands, and Anna Thorvaldsdottir among others. Notable collaborators include Claire Chase, Theaster Gates, Nathalie Joachim and Miguel Zenón and many more.

In 2016, the group released Serious Business which was nominated for a 2017 Grammy Award. The Spektral Quartet created the Feldman Forward Initiative to help raise money for GirlForward, an organization that assist refugee girls who have resettled in Chicago, Illinois and in Austin, Texas, and challenged attendees at its Chicago premiere of Morton Feldman’s Quartet No. 2 on March 11 by promising for every man who stayed for the entirety of five-hours a donation in his name would be made. In 2019, Nathalie Joachim's album Fanm d'Ayiti, which featured the group, was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. Past quartet members include Aurelien Fort Pederzoli (violin) and J. Austin Wulliman (violin). This collection contains concert posters and programs, artwork, memorabilia, magazine and newspaper articles, as well as the quartet's CD's and vinyl records. This material would be of interest to researchers studying contemporary chamber music in Chicago and at the University of Chicago.
