Biographical Note

Julie Saville was born on August 30, 1947, one of three children. She grew up in several southern cities during the 1950s and 1960s, including Tuscaloosa, Little Rock, and Memphis.

Saville earned a bachelor’s degree in History from Brandeis University in 1968 and a master’s degree from Yale University in 1975. In 1986, she completed a PhD in History, also at Yale University. Saville taught at the College of Charleston, the University of Virginia, and the University of Maryland before accepting a professorship at University of California San Diego in 1986. In 1994, she was hired as an Associate Professor in the History Department at the University of Chicago.

Saville’s research focused on plantation societies in the southern United States and the Caribbean from the 18th to the 20th centuries. She was particularly interested in changes to daily life during the era of trans-Atlantic slave emancipations, labor history, and popular forms of political expression. Her 1994 monograph, The Work of Reconstruction, examines changing social, political, and labor relations during and after the American Civil War and won the Avery O Craven Award in 1995. Saville was also the author of numerous publications, journal articles, and edited volumes.

Julie Saville died on December 16, 2023.
