This collections is composed principally of love letters written by Donald Nahum Rothman and Elizabeth “Bette” Rothman (née Davidson) to one another between 1941 and 1945, with the bulk of the letters dated 1943-1945. Donald Rothman (1923-2009) was a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the United States Navy who served in the North Atlantic and Pacific Theater during the Second World War. The dates of his service span 1943-1946; at the time his writing, he was stationed mainly at naval bases in Miami, New Jersey, and southern California. Bette Davidson (1924-2014) earned her A.A. from the University of Chicago in 1942 and remained in Chicago during most of the period of her writing. The couple was Jewish, and both had roots in Baltimore, Maryland.
