Historical Note

A River Runs Through It is a 1992 film directed by Robert Redford. The screenplay was adapted from Norman Maclean’s loosely autobiographical novella published in 1976. Maclean earned his PhD at the University of Chicago in 1940 and served as the William Rainey Harper Professor in the Department of English. Richard Friedenberg’s adaptation of the novella was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. The film won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography. The collection consists of revised copies of scripts as well as material related to the film’s production.
