Abstract:

Dr. Ricardo B. Quintana, Jr. (b. August 23, 1940, d. November 25, 2010) studied at Harvard University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His academic research was in the field of group theory, particularly on the restricted Burnside problem. The papers contain his lecture notes and research from his undergraduate and graduate work, as well as several unpublished manuscripts.

Biographical Note

Ricardo Beckwith Quintana, Jr. (b. August 23, 1940, d. November 25, 2010) was born in Madison, Wisconsin to Dr. Ricardo Beckwith Quintana, a professor of English, and Janet Garland MacQueary Quintana. He received his AB in mathematics from Harvard University in 1962 and his Masters and PhD, also in mathematics, from University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1970. Dr. Quintana’s professional work was in group theory, particularly on restricted Burnside groups. He married Dr. Judith Terrie Dotz Quintana, who would go on to teach at the University of Chicago, on April 6, 1966. They were divorced in 1971, and Dr. Quintana married Kathleen Vinz on August 4, 1984. Dr. Quintana passed away in 2010 at the age of 70.

Scope Note

The Ricardo Beckwith Quintana, Jr. Papers are organized into three series:

Series I: Personal

Series II: Education

Series III: Research and Writing

The collection contains manuscripts, notebooks and loose notes. Materials date between 1960 and 1995, with the bulk of the material from Quintana’s graduate years, 1962-1970.

Series I, Personal, contains Quintana’s typescript CV with handwritten annotations, professional letters of recommendation written for Quintana by former professors and colleagues with Quintana’s handwritten annotations, and a biography of Quintana written by himself for “Who’s Who in the World.”

Series II, Education, contains Quintana’s class notes (both bound and unbound) from his undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as photocopied handwritten notes for courses he taught as a teaching assistant both at the University of Chicago and during his doctoral work at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and a typescript copy of his doctoral dissertation. Materials are arranged in rough chronological order.

Series III, Research and Writing, contains undated manuscript drafts, both holographic and typescript, including two drafts of a manuscript entitled "Groups, Rings, and Modules" (n.d.).
