Max Putzel (1925-1996) was a professor of German Language and Literature at Indiana University. This collections contains his coursebooks and notes from his time as an undergraduate student at the University of Chicago.

Biographical Note

Max Putzel (1925-1996), was born in Germany and completed his Bachelor’s (1949), Master’s (1952), and Ph.D. (1965) at the University of Chicago. He worked as a professor of German Language and Literature at Indiana University from 1965 to 1990, and retired in Hyde Park. Though Putzel specialized in 19th century German literature, he also published a well-known biography of William Marion Reedy, editor of the St. Louis Mirror in the early 20th century.

This collection consists of coursebooks and notes from Max Putzel’s time as a University of Chicago undergraduate, and may be relevant for any researcher interested in the history of undergraduate education in the 20th century or at the University of Chicago specifically.
