Scope Note

The Jazz Institute of Chicago Robert Peck Collection is organized into four series: Series I, Personal; Series II, Events; Series III, Publications and Oversize; and Series IV, Scrapbooks. The Jazz Institute of Chicago Robert Peck Collection contains auction lists, correspondence, essays, catalogs, publications, newsletters, newspaper articles, ephemera, scrapbooks, and playbills.

Series I, Personal, contains business cards, correspondence, essays, reproductions of record labels, photographs, and a WTAQ Picture Booklet. Correspondence is arranged chronologically and includes letters from jazz collectors, jazz club members, publication companies, radio show fans, radio stations, and recording companies. There are auction lists from Don and Polly Gunnison, Gus Kuhlman, and Joseph Madison. The essays are written by Sid Dawson and are about jazz music, musicians, and bands. The photographs are of jazz musicians. Also included are indexes of Peck's music collection, though this collection is not owned by the University of Chicago.

Series II, Events, contains playbills, advertisements, and fliers, from jazz festivals, Chicago jazz clubs, and theatres in Chicago and New York City. See Series III for oversize ephemera.

Series III, Publications and Oversize, contains jazz calendars, jazz club ephemera, newspaper articles, publications, and sheet music. Newspaper articles are about jazz records, record companies, collectors, and jazz events from publications such as Billboard, Music and Rhythm, and Victor Records Review. Newsletters include The Blue Note News, GTJ and CR News, and The University of Illinois Bulletin. Record catalogs are from Ross Ghent, Richard Holbrook, Groove Record Shop, Sessions Record Shop, Bluebird Records, and Victor Records. Also included are posters from Chicago jazz club events.

Series IV, Scrapbooks, contains catalogs, newspaper articles, magazine articles, programs, and record sleeves. Most of the articles are from Downbeat Magazine and Chicago Tribune. See below for detailed description of individual scrapbooks.
