Matthew H. Nitecki (-2016) was a curator of fossil invertebrates at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. He earned his master’s degree in 1962 and PhD in 1968 from the University of Chicago. While at the University, Nitecki was the Resident Head of Shorey House in Pierce Tower from 1963-1966, which was an all-male residence hall on campus.
Nitecki was the last curator of the Walker Museum at the University of Chicago. He oversaw the transfer of its paleontology collection to the Field Museum in the early 1960s. He remained with the Field Museum for the rest of his career, retiring as curator of invertebrate fossils, while also teaching biology at University of Chicago.
This collection includes correspondence, memorabilia, brochures, papers, memoranda, photographs, and advertisements. This collection also includes a hammer that was given to Nitecki by J. Marvin Weller, Professor of Geophysical Sciences and the last director of the Walker Museum. The hammer may have belonged to Weller’s father, Stuart Weller, who was an earlier Director of the Walker Museum.
