Citation

Scope Note

The creed is written in one hand on four paper leaves, and bound with nineteenth-century boards. The paper bears a watermark (ff. 2-3) depicting an ox’s head surmounted by a crown and a star, matching the watermark used by a paper-maker in Hallstadt (Wurtemberg) in 1556. The manuscript contains a German translation of the original Latin Athanasian Creed, represented as “the testimony of St. Athanasius, concerning the Holy Trinity, against the Arians.” There are no additional comments or names in the manuscript beyond the text of the creed itself. The author may have made an original translation of the creed, since the wording differs significantly from the standard German versions.
