Biographical Note
Born in 1892, Carl Richard Moore spent his early life in the Ozark region of Missouri and attended Drury College in Springfield, MO. During his college years, Moore became interested in biology and, particularly, reproductive biology. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Drury College and completed his doctoral studies in the department of Zoology at the University of Chicago. Under the mentorship of Frank R. Lillie, a founder of the field of embryology, Moore researched the effects of hormones in mammals. He received his Ph.D. in 1918 and joined the faculty of the department of Zoology at the University of Chicago, where he worked until his death in 1955. Moore made significant contributions to the field of mammalian endocrinology; he was part of the team of University of Chicago researchers that first isolated testosterone in 1920. With fellow researcher Dorothy Price, he theorized the “push-pull” interactions between the pituitary gland and sex glands, which provided insight into the complexities of fertility in mammals.
Scope Note
The Carl R. Moore papers consist of 0.75 linear feet of material from the years 1916-1972. The papers have been divided into two series—Series I: Biographical Material and Series II: Writings. Series I includes a biographical administrative document, a history of the Department of Zoology at the University of Chicago, and a “biographical memoir” of Moore’s life written by his advisee and fellow researcher Dorothy Price. Series II consists of reprints of journal articles, conference proceedings, book reviews, and brief biographies of Frank R. Lillie, all written by Moore.
