Biographical Note

This collection contains the letters, medals, and writings of James V. Mitchell, Jr. He completed his Bachelor’s in 1948, Master’s in 1950, and Doctoral degree in 1953 all at the University of Chicago. During his Bachelor’s, he was enlisted in the US Army and fought in France, before being captured as a P.O.W. in the fall of 1944. He went on to receive the Purple Heart Medal, along with numerous other military awards. Upon completing his Doctoral studies, he was a professor of Educational Psychology at Miami University, Purdue University, The University of Texas, and the University of Rochester. In 1965 he began his career in higher education administration, acting as Chairman, Associate Dean, Deans, and Vice President at The University of Rochester, Ball State University, and Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.

He also worked as the Director and Professor of Educational Psychology at the Buros Institute of Mental Measures as well as Professor of Educational Psychology at The University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He retired in 1992, leaving behind a large body of publications in the field of educational Psychology. This material would be of interest to those interested in first-hand accounts of World War II.
