Biographical Note

John F. McHugh (-2010) was a teacher and principal in the Allentown School District in Pennsylvania. In 1960, McHugh won a nationwide contest from “John Gunther’s High Road,” an American television travelogue series. The television program conducted a contest for teachers who were using “High Roads” materials in their classrooms. More than 33,000 teachers entered the contest, and McHugh was the grand prize winner. He was awarded an around-the-world trip and reception with dignitaries in Washington. McHugh’s winning classroom project was carried out by a group of students who collaborated over an 8-month period to create a comprehensive review of all of John Gunther’s writings.

McHugh met Gunther during the awards process. Gunther took a personal interest in McHugh, providing him with introductions to significant individuals and in the course of time, the two became friends and correspondents.
