| Abstract: | This collection contains photographic prints, ephemera, and artifacts from the John Maloof Collection of Vivian Maier. It includes black and white and color prints taken by Maier, most of which are street photographs of Chicago and New York City from the 1950s-1970s. Also included are some travel photographs, the largest fraction of which were taken in France. The collection also contains photographic equipment and cameras, film boxes and processing envelopes, newspaper clippings, correspondence, financial records, notes, empty film canisters, clothing, shoes, and miscellaneous personal items. The material ranges in date from circa 1900-circa 2010, with the bulk dating from the 1950s-1980s. |
The John Maloof Collection of Vivian Maier is open for research, with the exception of the material in Series IX, which is restricted for fifty years from its date of creation. Series IX as a whole will be fully open in 2061.
Self-service photography is allowed when using the collection providing the researcher has read and signed our self-service photography use agreement.

John Maloof is a filmmaker, historian, and photographer who first brought Vivian Maier's photographs to the public's attention. He owns and curates the Maloof Collection of Vivian Maier and is co-director and co-producer of the film Finding Vivian Maier. His books include Vivian Maier: A Photographer Found, Vivian Maier: Self-Portraits, and Vivian Maier: Street Photographer.
Vivian Dorothy Maier (1926-2009) was a twentieth-century American photographer. She is most well-known for her street photographs of Chicago and New York City. Maier was employed as a caregiver for most of her life and did not publicly exhibit or share her work during her lifetime. It was only after her death that her photographs began to be made public and attracted significant interest and recognition.
Vivian Maier was born in New York City to Charles Maier and Marie Jaussaud, immigrants from Austria-Hungary and France. By many accounts, her childhood and early family life were difficult. She spent significant time in France with her mother as well as in New York City. By 1951 she returned to New York, and in 1956 she moved to Chicago, where she took a job as a nanny that she would remain at for many years. In this position, unlike many of her later ones, she had access to a darkroom and was able to develop her own prints.
In the 1950s and 1960s, in addition to working as a nanny, Maier traveled widely, visiting locations in the United States, Europe, South America, the Caribbean, and Asia. Throughout her life, she continued to work as a caregiver, mostly in the Chicago area, and take photographs. In the later decades of the twentieth century and early twenty-first century, she struggled financially and did not develop much of the film she took. Towards the end of her life, she received financial help from some of the children she had cared for in the 1950s and 1960s. Maier died in 2009 after suffering a head injury resulting from a fall in 2008.

Series I, Photographic Prints, contains prints of photographs taken by Maier, including both black and white and color images. Most of the images are street photographs of Chicago and New York City in the 1950s-1970s. Public figures depicted include Patricia Nixon, Nelson Algren, Richard J. Daley, John F. Kennedy, Frank Sinatra, Shelley Winters, Anne Baxter, Pope John Paul II, Marcel Marceau, Jimmy Carter, Ted Kennedy, and Nelson Rockefeller. Also included are some travel photographs, including France, Canada, Egypt, Thailand, Cambodia, and unidentified locations in Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. The series also includes images that likely depict some of the families that employed Maier as a caregiver. The contents of this series range in date from the early 1950s-2010, with some undated material. With the exception of the first five boxes, black and white and color photographs are arranged separated, each in rough chronological order with undated material at the end of the series. Folders are marked with the number of photographs they contain. In the occasional cases in which photographs were found in envelopes or other enclosures, the enclosures were included in this count.
Date information provided for the color prints is generally based on the processor stamp on the back of the images. The date doesn't necessarily reflect the date the photograph was taken.
Series II, Photographs Collected by Vivian Maier, contains prints of photographs presumed to have been taken by photographers other than Maier. Most are professional studio portraits or postcards. It also includes a set of later travel photographs and a fragment of 16mm motion-picture film. The contents of this series range in date from the turn of the 20th century to the 1970s or 1980s, with some undated material. They are arranged in rough chronological order, with undated material at the end of the series. Folders are marked with the number of photographs they contain. In the occasional cases in which photographs were found loose in envelopes or other enclosures, the enclosures were included in this count.
Series III, Correspondence, contains incoming correspondence addressed to Vivian Maier, as well as a draft of an outgoing letter in her hand. Correspondents include families soliciting Maier's services as a caregiver, as well as personal acquaintances and commercial or charitable entities. Some pieces of correspondence appear to have been delivered by hand, rather than mailed. The contents of this series range in date from the mid-1960s-mid-1990s and are arranged alphabetically by correspondent.
Correspondence found among Maier's paper that was neither composed by nor addressed to her is filed under Series VI: Notes, Papers, and Ephemera. Correspondence related to Vivian Maier's personal finances has been restricted for 50 years after date of record creation and arranged in Series IX.
Series IV, Notes, Papers, and Ephemera, contains notes, most in Vivian Maier's hand, as well as receipts, a storage contract, a birth certificate, a travel itinerary, unattributed drawings, photographic processing envelopes, business cards (most from Chicago-area businesses), and promotional or advertising material, much of it related to photographic equipment. It also includes correspondence found among Maier's papers that was neither addressed to nor sent by her. This series comprises material dated from 1929 to the late 1990s. Dated material is arranged chronologically at the beginning of the series, followed by undated film processing envelopes, handwritten notes, and ephemera.
Series V, Newspaper Clippings and Scrapbooks, contains newspaper pages and clippings collected by Vivian Maier, which she preserved in binders and in plastic picture frames. The overwhelming bulk of the clippings in this series date to the 1990s.
Series VI, Cameras and Photographic Equipment, contains Vivian Maier's still and motion picture cameras, lenses, filter, and other camera accessories, as well as period boxes that had been used to store her photographic prints before the latter were added to the collection. It dates from the 1920s or 1930s to 1983, with a significant amount of undated material.
Series VII, Artifacts, contains clothing, shoes, books, keys, and other personal items owned by Vivian Maier. This material is generally undated.
Series VIII, Oversize, contains two poster-sized color photographic prints taken by Vivian Maier, dating from the mid-1980s.
Series IX, Restricted, contains financial and research records ranging in date from the 1960s through early 2010s. The material is restricted for 50 years from its date of creation. The financial records include financial correspondence arranged alphabetically by correspondent, followed by stock certificates, tax-related materials, and receipts. It ranges in date from 1962-1996 and will be fully open in 2046.
This series also contains three folders of notes from research on Vivian Maier that was conducted after her death and include financial information. This material dates from the early 2010s and has been placed at the end of the series.

Series II: Photographs Collected by Vivian Maier |
This series contains prints of photographs presumed to have been taken by photographers other than Maier. Most are professional studio portraits or postcards. It also includes a set of later travel photographs and a fragment of 16mm motion-picture film. The contents of this series range in date from the turn of the 20th century to the 1970s or 1980s, with some undated material. They are arranged in rough chronological order, with undated material at the end of the series. Folders are marked with the number of photographs they contain. In the occasional cases in which photographs were found loose in envelopes or other enclosures, the enclosures were included in this count.

Series III: Correspondence |
This series contains incoming correspondence addressed to Vivian Maier, as well as a draft of an outgoing letter in her hand. Correspondents include families soliciting Maier's services as a caregiver, as well as personal acquaintances and commercial or charitable entities. Some pieces of correspondence appear to have been delivered by hand, rather than mailed. The contents of this series range in date from the mid-1960s-mid-1990s and are arranged alphabetically by correspondent.
Correspondence found among Maier's paper that was neither composed by nor addressed to her is filed under Series VI: Notes, Papers, and Ephemera. Correspondence related to Vivian Maier's personal finances has been restricted for 50 years after date of record creation and arranged in Series IX.

This series contains notes, most in Vivian Maier's hand, as well as receipts, a storage contract, a birth certificate, a travel itinerary, unattributed drawings, photographic processing envelopes, business cards (most from Chicago-area businesses), and promotional or advertising material, much of it related to photographic equipment. It also includes correspondence found among Maier's papers that was neither addressed to nor sent by her. This series comprises material dated from 1929 to the late 1990s. Dated material is arranged chronologically at the beginning of the series, followed by undated film processing envelopes, handwritten notes, and ephemera.

This series contains restricted financial and research records ranging in date from the 1960s through early 2010s. The material is restricted for 50 years from its date of creation. The financial records include financial correspondence arranged alphabetically by correspondent, followed by stock certificates, tax-related materials, and receipts. It ranges in date from 1962-1996 and will be fully open in 2046.
This series also contains three folders of notes from research on Vivian Maier that was conducted after her death and includes financial information. This material dates from the early 2010s and has been placed at the end of the series.
