The World's Columbian Exposition was held between May 1893 and October 1893 in Chicago to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival to the New World. Primarily located on Chicago's South Side in Jackson Park and the Midway Plaisance, the Columbian Exposition contained hundreds of structures celebrating various cultures across the world. It is estimated that over 20 million people visited the World's Columbian Exposition.
The 1933 World's Fair — officially titled "A Century of Progress International Exposition" — took place from 1933 to 1934 in the Near South Side of Chicago and celebrated, among many things, the 100th anniversary of the founding of Chicago. A success, the World's Fair was popular enough to be opened for an extra five months and it was the first international fair in the United States that was able to pay for itself.
This collection is divided into two series: Series I, World's Fairs and Series II, Magazines and Brochures.
Series I, World's Fairs consists of official guidebooks and ephemera of the two World's Fairs held in Chicago in 1893 and 1933.
Series II, Magazines and Brochures consists of magazines and newspaper clippings roughly contemporary with the 1933 World's Fair.
