Starting in the late 1970s, the Jazz Institute of Chicago began a series of interviews with musicians and other individuals involved in the jazz community. The objective was to "compile a thorough history of jazz music in Chicago."
The Jazz Institute of Chicago Oral Histories contains drafts, transcripts and audio recordings of interviews with Chicago jazz musicians. There is also an interview with jazz historian and collector John Steiner. Recordings are in compact disc format; all audio recordings have been reformatted for access. Transcripts are not included for all audio recordings.
