Leon Orris Jacobson (1911-1992) was a physician, researcher in hematology, educator and administrator at the University of Chicago. Raised in a Norwegian community in Sims, North Dakota, Jacobson became interested in medicine while working as a teacher in the local school. He received a B.A. at North Dakota State University in 1935, then moved on the University of Chicago's medical school. After receiving his medical degree in 1939, he spent the rest of his career at the University of Chicago.
Jacobson's medical research focused on blood diseases and the biological effects of radiation. During World War II, Jacobson was involved in government research projects at the Toxicity Laboratory and the Metallurgical Laboratory, where he was the primary physician for University of Chicago staff working on the Manhattan Project. His clinical use of nitrogen mustards to treat cancer was among the first forms of chemotherapy. He later conducted important research on the formation of blood cells, studying the regulatory hormone erythropoietin, and the process of hemopoiesis, the formation of blood cells. Much of this work was accomplished in collaboration with medical students, and with laboratory technicians Edna Marks and Evelyn Gaston. Jacobson's work contributed to later achievements in research on erythropoietin, as well as progress in the clinical treatment of blood cancers and kidney diseases.
Between 1942 and 1951, Jacobson moved up the faculty ranks of the Department of Medicine, serving as instructor, assistant professor, then associate professor. He was appointed a full professorship in 1951, then became the Joseph Regenstein Professor in 1965. He continued conducting research and seeing patients after attaining emeritus status in 1976.
Jacobson was an influential administrator in the university, and his work was instrumental to the development of the Division of the Biological Sciences, the School of Medicine, and other biology and medical units. From 1945-1951, he served as Associate Dean, Division of the Biological Sciences and the School of Medicine. He returned as Dean of the Division of the Biological Sciences and Pritzker School of Medicine from 1966-1975. He also served as Director of the Metallurgical Laboratory, founding director of Argonne Cancer Research Hospital, director of the Franklin McLean Institute, and chair of the Department of Medicine.
Jacobson was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1965 and was active on the organization's board, as well as the board of the National Institute of Health. He was also honored with awards from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American College of Physicians, the American Radium Society, the Leukemia Society, the American Nuclear Society, and the Lincoln Academy of Illinois. He received honorary degrees from North Dakota State University and Acadia University in Nova Scotia.
Throughout his life, Jacobson maintained a close connection to his family and community in North Dakota. In 1976, Jacobson received the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award, given to prominent North Dakotans by the state's governor.
Jacobson died of complications from lung cancer in 1992. His first wife, Elizabeth Benton Jacobson, preceded him in 1983. He was survived by his second wife, Elise Torczynski Jacobson, his son Eric, daughter Judith Bonacker, and their families.
This collection represents Jacobson's career as a medical researcher, university administrator, educator and personal physician. It documents his work outside the University of Chicago, including his service with government institutions and professional organizations. The collection also includes material related to Jacobson's family and his North Dakota heritage.

Series III: Writings |
This series contains writings by Jacobson and his colleagues, as well as a variety of publications, unpublished writings, and publicity material on topics of interest to Jacobson. This series is organized into three subseries.
Subseries 1: Government Research Reports, 1944-1951, contains declassified and unclassified government documents. Most of these report research conducted by Argonne National Laboratory or the University of Chicago's Metallurgical Laboratory, operating under contract to the United State Atomic Energy Commission. Jacobson was involved in many of these projects as a researcher or administrator. Also included are reports of research carried out at other locations, such as Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. Most of the reports are organized according to alphanumeric codes assigned by the government agency. Also included in this subseries are the Manhattan Engineer District's reports of investigations of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, a set of reports of Jacobson's Toxicity Laboratory research on nitrogen mustards, and a handbook produced by Brookhaven National Laboratory. Associated annotations and correspondence are filed with some reports. The Atomic Energy Commission's partial index of these documents is found at the end of the filing sequence. More detailed indexes of these reports are found in a card file transferred to Series X. A radiation chart associated with one of these reports is also found in Series X.
Subseries 2: Chronological Files, spans the years 1943-1991, and consists mainly of writings by Jacobson, alone or in collaboration with colleagues. Included here are working drafts of many of Jacobson's research articles and speeches, as well as a draft of the monograph Erythropoietin and the Regulation of Erythropoiesis. Material in this subseries includes drafts, notes, reprints, outlines and scripts. Related correspondence, usually discussing editorial matters or requests for reprints, is filed with some writings.
Subseries 3: General Publications and Publicity Material, spans the 1940s-1990s. While much of the material in this subseries documents Jacobson's life and achievements, a wide variety of topics are represented. This subseries contains reprints of works by Jacobson and others; periodicals such as newsletters, magazines, journals, annual reports and conference proceedings; monographs; clippings; and publicity material such as brochures, catalogues and conference programs. This subseries includes a set of alphabetical files identified by title or subject, with the remainder of the files arranged by format. Oversize periodicals and clippings have been transferred to Series X.
Reports, articles and drafts by Jacobson and colleagues are also included in Series II, V and VI.

Series IV: Research Data |
This series documents research in Jacobson's laboratory, including work on hemopoiesis, erythropoietin and the effects of radiation on red blood cells. Much of the material in this series was generated by laboratory technicians Edna Marks and Evelyn Gaston.
Material in this series includes graphs, diagrams, tables, lab reports, logs, instructions and notes. Files in this series are arranged alphabetically by subject, but also include a set of general files at the beginning of the series, and some unidentified files at the end. The largest groups of files relate to research on mice, rabbits and rats; many of these headings are further subdivided according to the laboratory's alphabetical codes which identify groups of research animals. Many files are not dated, but likely date from the late 1940s-late 1960s.
Oversize material, consisting of a set of charts related to research on rabbits, has been transferred to Series X.
