The Committee on the Deanship in the Division of the Humanities was appointed on February 24, 1947 as a search committee to interview and evaluate candidates for the position vacated by Richard P. McKeon. Napier Wilt chaired the committee comprised of Blanche Boyer (Latin), Edward Brown (English), James Lea Cate (History), Thorkild Jacobsen (Oriental Institute), George Metcalf (German), Ulrich A. Middeldorf (Art), Clarence Parmenter (Linguistics), Charner M. Perry (Philosophy), Gertrude Smith (Greek), B. Howard Talley (Music), Amos N. Wilder (New Testament) and Pierre Vigneron (Romance Languages). A sub-committee charged with winnowing the field of candidates was composed of Smith, Cate, Jacobsen, Metcalf, and Brown. The Committee on the Deanship concluded its thirteen-month long search on March 13, 1948 with the unanimous nomination of Thorkild Jacobsen.
The Division of Humanities Committee on Deanship Records is made up of official minutes, surveys and correspondence. The materials are gathered chronologically in a loose-leaf binder with an extensive alphabetical index appended.
