Dr. Paul Herbert, Jr. (1915-1960) attended the University of Chicago’s High School from 1930-1934 before going on to earn both an undergraduate degree (1939) and Ph.D in Geology (1949). Herbert’s advisor was the head of the Department of Geology, Dr. J Harlen Bretz (1882-1981) and the pair maintained a close friendship until Herbert’s death in 1960. This collection includes a some of Bretz’s work.
Herbert’s graduate research and dissertation focused on the stratigraphy of the Decorah Formation in Southern Illinois, a fossiliferous shale that formed during the Ordovician Period which began 485.4 million years ago.
