Harrison received his A.B. from Southern Methodist University in 1921, his B.S. from the University of Chicago in 1925, and his Ph.D. from Chicago in 1930.
Roland Wendell Harrison (1897-1964) was at the University of Chicago from 1937 to 1963, serving as Professor of microbiology, Dean of the Division of Biological Sciences, and Vice-President of the University.
The Roland Wendell Harrison Papers contain professional correspondence and speeches, primarily relating to Harrison's involvement in professional organizations. This collection of correspondence and speeches reflects the period after Harrison's appointment as Vice-President and Dean of the Faculties in 1947. Although most of Harrison's speeches reflect his administrative role, the correspondence is with the many organizations which must have interested Harrison as a professional biologist (the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Cancer Society); with the organizations with which he was even more intimately associated (National Advisory Dental Research Council and the Journal of Infectious Diseases), as well as with community organizations like the City Club of Chicago; and, increasingly, with those concerned with education, like the Journal of Higher Education.
