Biographical Note

Arnold Green, who composed the scrapbook, was the great-grandfather of Judi Clements, the collection’s donor. Green tragically perished aboard the S.S. Eastland on July 24, 1915. A passenger ship for tourists, the Eastland rolled over while docked on the Chicago River, killing 844 passengers and crew.

Scope Note

The collection consists of a single scrapbook that has an elaborate front cover carrying the title “Columbian Souvenir.” Although the scrapbook is undated, the cover title suggests that the volume was prepared sometime around the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893, which produced a range of souvenir and memorabilia material. However, it is unclear whether the scrapbook itself or the illustrations that it contains were acquired at the Exposition. The illustrations are more consistent in manufacture and design with the period genre of Victorian “scraps.”

The scrapbook contains over two hundred embossed, die-cut chromolithograph illustrations. Typical of the Victorian style, the scraps are thematically wide-ranging. They include formally dressed adults and children; soldiers, policemen, and firefighters; animals, cherubs and angels; flags of the world, pastoral vignettes, and fairy tale scenes.
