Biographical Note

Lawrence Samuel Sheridan Grauman Jr. was a writer, editor, and educator who is perhaps best known for serving as the editor of the Antioch Review from 1969-1975. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky on November 8, 1935 to Lawrence S. and Katherine (Heine) Grauman. He grew up in Louisville, where his father was a prominent attorney and judge, and later attended several undergraduate colleges and served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1955. He earned a diploma from the Université de Montpellier in France in 1956 and an MA from the University of Chicago in 1963. While at Chicago he met Cynthia Whitsell. They married on August 10, 1962 and had two daughters, Aimee Elizabeth and Lucia Lawrence. The marriage ended in divorce.

Grauman served as News Director for Nassau Broadcasting Company in New Jersey from 1963-1965, and then spent over a decade in the field of higher education. In addition to serving as editor of the Antioch Review from 1969-1975, he taught at Antioch College from 1966-1967 and 1969-1971. He also taught at Vassar College from 1967-1969 and served as Acting Dean of Bard College in 1968. In addition to teaching and editing, he wrote for a number of prominent magazines, including The Nation, The New Republic, The New Leader, Dissent, Harper’s, and Film Quarterly. He edited and wrote the introduction to "Letters of a Self-Made Merchant to his Son," by George Horace Lorimer, which was published in 1970. After leaving the Antioch Review in 1975, Grauman worked briefly for Harper’s Magazine and taught courses at the University of California Berkeley and San Francisco State University. He died in California in 2017.

Series IV: Antioch Review

Subseries 1, Administrative files, contains records from Grauman’s role as Editor of the Antioch Review, a position he held from 1969-1975. It ranges in date from 1953-1975 and is arranged alphabetically. Over half of the material is related to promotional efforts, publicity, and advertising. Also included are budgets, financial records, a self-study and clippings.

Subseries 2 contains Lawrence Grauman’s correspondence files from his time as editor of the Antioch Review as well as backfiles of correspondence that he inherited from previous editors, including Paul Bixler, Paul Rohmann, and Victor Ayoub. The letters include rejections and acceptances; inquiries from authors; evaluations of manuscripts and advice for authors; discussions of the controversies related to Antioch College and the Review; responses to the advertisement Lawrence Grauman placed in the New York Review of Books to sell the Antioch Review; and other topics related to the administrative and intellectual functioning of the magazine. Some of these correspondents were also Grauman’s friends or acquaintances, so in these cases some of the letters also touch on more personal matters unrelated to the Review. The correspondence ranges in date from 1941-1975 and is arranged alphabetically according to the last name of the correspondent or the name of the organization or publication. When a person was writing on behalf of an organization, those letters are generally filed under the organization or publication’s name.

Subseries 3 contains writing that was accepted for publication during Grauman’s tenure as editor of the Antioch Review, mostly in the form of typescripts. Many are edited and some are accompanied by related notes or correspondence. The series also contains a few galley proofs, although most of these can be found in the Oversize Series. The typescripts are arranged first according to the issue that they were published in, and then in the order that they appeared in that issue.

Subseries 4 contains issues of the Antioch Review published from 1953-1981. Unless otherwise noted there is one copy of each issue. The material is arranged chronologically, with the exception of the Antioch Review Anthology from 1953, which has been placed at the end of the series.

Subseries 5, Artifacts, contains an undated Antioch Review Stamp.

Series V: Little Magazines

Subseries 1 contains research files from Lawrence Grauman’s Little Magazines Project. He intended to edit and write a book on Little Magazines but never completed the project. Included are drafts of an annotated bibliography; collected articles, reports, and clippings on little magazines and related topics; material from organizations such as the Coordinating Council of Literary magazines and COSMEP; fliers, advertisements, brochures, and catalogs for various little magazines; interview notes; and files containing responses to a questionnaire that Grauman sent to editors or administrators across the country who worked on little magazines. Many of the questionnaire files also contain additional pieces of research that has been filed with the questionnaire. The material ranges in date from 1943-1978 and is arranged alphabetically.

Subseries 2 contains Lawrence Grauman’s correspondence from the Little Magazines project. It ranges in date from 1969-1979 and is arranged alphabetically. When a person was writing on behalf of an organization, those letters are generally filed under the organization or publication’s name.

Subseries 3, Writing, contains a small number of typescripts by Lawrence Grauman and others that Grauman intended to use for his book on Little Magazines, as well as a few student papers on Little Magazines. Most of the typescripts are accompanied by related notes or correspondence. They range in date from 1969-1971 and are arranged alphabetically.

Subseries 4, Publications, contains issues of little magazines, newsletters related to publishing, and a few books by small publishers. It is arranged alphabetically by title and ranges in date from 1963-1974.
