The Graduate School of Education was established in 1958, superseding the University Committee on the Preparation of Teachers. Its main function was to co-ordinate the educational offerings and resources of extant University departments and agencies. Participating groups and organizaitons included faculty from the University's graduate divisions, the Laboratory Schools, the Department of Education (also a graduate department in the Division of Social Sciences, the Audio-Visual Instructional Materials Center, the Midwest Administration Center, the Reading Clinic, the Comparative Education Center, The School Improvement Program, the Teaching-Learning Laboratory, and the Education Library. The School was closely allied with the Department of Education, so much so that the positions of Dean of the School and Chair of the Department were jointly held by one individual. The School awarded the Master of Arts in Teaching, the Master of Science in Teaching, and for a time, the Master of Science in Administration.
In the late 1970s, the focus in education moved away from school and funding diminished. The School ceased operation in 1977.
The collection contains booklets and brochures, reports (including accreditation reports), press releases, and a small amount of instructional material. Researchers may find a narrative history of education at the University of Chicago, in the program booklets, helpful in tracing the various education-related departments at the University. Material is arranged chronologically.
