Historical Note
In 1927, Professor Archer Taylor of the Department of Germanic Languages and Literature recommended to the University that transcriptions and translations be made of the collection of Finnish folk-tales in the archives of the Finnish Literary Society of Helsinki. Professor Taylor wrote, "The Finnish tales represent the largest single mass of traditional material in manuscript, except possibly the Estonian archives. Since these tales are international in their distribution no one national collection stands alone. Any study which concerns tales enjoying international currency profits from this Finnish material, and the preparation of such studies is substantially encouraged by our possession of it." Professor Kaarle Krohn, who was then directing the archives of the Finnish Literary Society, believed that the copying and translating of this material would assure their preservation and would make their use more general. Following Professor Taylor's recommendation, an appropriation was made to carry out this work from funds made available to the University by the General Education Board for research in the humanities. The work began under Professor Taylor's direction in the autumn of 1927 and continued for the following three years.
Scope Note
The Finnish Folktale Records contain approximately 14,000 pages of typewritten transcriptions with interlinear translation into English of Finnish folktales from the Finnish Literary Society of Helsinki. These headings derive from the Antti Aarne- Stith Thompson classification. The tales are in consecutive order but the collection is not complete when compared to the index. [Index: Folklore Fellows, 75, no. 184, 1961 (GB.1. F67)]
