Abstract:

Earl Alisan Evans (1910-1999) was professor and former chair of the department of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Chicago. This collection primarily consists of departmental documents from the 1960s that are from his time as chair of the biochemistry department.

Biographical Note

Earl Alisan Evans (1910-1999) was professor and former chair of the department of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Chicago. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1932. He completed his graduate work at Columbia University in biochemistry and where earned his PhD in 1936. Evans was a research fellow at Columbia University for a year, and then joined the faculty at the University of Chicago in 1937. In 1939, he worked in the laboratory of Hans Krebs for a research fellowship. Evans returned to Chicago in 1940 where he became full professor and chair of biochemistry in 1942. This collection includes departmental documents from the 1960s that are from his time as chair of the biochemistry department.

During World War II, Evans worked for the US Department of State. This collection includes a scrapbook that documented his travels in Europe during this time.

This collection also includes international driver’s license and related documentation from 1952. The licenses include one for David L. Lasswell, who was Evans’ adopted son.

Researchers should note that there are two different spellings of Evans’ middle name: Alisan and Alison.
