Elizabeth Hilken Nitze Paepcke was born on August 28, 1902, in Baltimore, Maryland. She was the daughter of Anina Sophia Hilken Nitze and William Albert Nitze, who was a faculty member and chair of the University of Chicago's Department of Romance Languages and Literatures. She had one brother, Paul. The Nitze family moved to Hyde Park, in Chicago, when she was six years old. Her nickname, "Pussy," was given to her by her mother when she was child and she retained the nickname throughout her life. Elizabeth attended Foxcroft, a boarding school for girls in Virginia, graduating in 1921. In 1922 Elizabeth married Walter Paul Paepcke. Elizabeth and Walter had a son Walter, Jr. (d. 1926) and three daughters, Anina, Paula and Antonia.
With Walter, Elizabeth became an important figure in the cultural and social life of Chicago. She was involved in the Art Institute, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Lyric Opera and numerous other organizations. She also belonged to several clubs including the Scribblers Club, the Casino Club and she appeared regularly in the society pages. She was particularly interested in modern art and was a member of the Art Institute's Women's Board and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Museum of Contemporary Art. She collected the works of artists such as Lazlo Moholy-Nagy, Pablo Picasso and others, and would occasionally loan these works to museums. The combination of her husband, Walter's, role in the business world as the founder of the Container Corporation of America, and her interests in art and culture shaped that company's seminal advertising campaign that focused on design and art. Elizabeth's interest in art and design also included working on interior design projects herself. She attended the School of the Art Institute and was involved in design projects for Marshall Fields and the University of Chicago International House.
In other cultural arenas, Elizabeth and Walter promoted the humanities. They participated in Great Books classes in Chicago and the Great Books Foundation. Elizabeth made important contributions to the Goethe Festival and the creation of the Aspen Institute for the Humanities. After Walter died in 1960, she remained a regular participant in the Aspen Institute for many years and in the International Design Conference in Aspen, and was involved in the Music Associates of Aspen. Among her circle of friends and acquaintances was the intellectual Mortimer Adler. They maintained a long friendship, corresponding about his work, autobiography and the Institute for Philosophical Research.
Known as the "Grand Dame of Aspen," Elizabeth was devoted to the city of Aspen, which she had first visited in 1938. She and Walter had taken the small mining town and revived it through the foundation of the Aspen Institute and the development of skiing. She also participated in numerous cultural events in Aspen, such as the design conference mentioned above. She maintained a residence in Aspen, spending more time there later in her life. Elizabeth was concerned with preserving historic buildings in the town, its expansion and its politics. Her involvement in Aspen extended to environmental issues in that area and in general. Especially later in life, she became increasingly interested in environmental impacts and dangers. She joined and contributed to the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies and the related Thorne Ecological Foundation.
Elizabeth had many interests and remained involved in many organizations throughout her life. An interest in music was reflected in her relationship with the pianists Victor and Vronsky Babin. She also was interested in politics, through the careers of her brother, Paul Nitze, a diplomat and civil servant, and Adlai Stevenson, Governor of Illinois and United Nations Ambassador. Elizabeth was a member of the Visiting Committee on the Humanities at the University of Chicago and was a friend of Robert M. Hutchins. She was also a member of the board of trustees of the University of Denver. She traveled widely and visited many countries as well as visiting the Antarctic. Elizabeth read broadly and often kept newspaper and magazine clippings that reflect her many interests as well as the lives of her friends and acquaintances.
Elizabeth maintained a lively involvement in her many cultural, political and intellectual interests all her life. She died in Aspen on June 15, 1994.

Subseries 3, Financial and Legal contains records of lawsuits that involved Elizabeth, primarily having to do with her Aspen properties, and includes records regarding her art collection. Some of the oldest material in the collection is found in Subseries 4, Walter Paepcke. This material pertains to Walter's father, Herman Paepcke. This subseries also includes a small amount of Walter's correspondence, several of his honorary degrees, and memorials. Subseries 5, Albert Schweitzer, contains correspondence between Elizabeth and Schweitzer and correspondence with persons affiliated with him or the Binder-Schweitzer hospital. Other material of note in this subseries includes photographs, newspaper clippings about Schweitzer, and a painted wooden clog that was given to her by F. Deikert (see letter); according to the letter that came with it, the shoe was carved from a tree trunk that Schweitzer used to sit on. Subseries 6, General, contains miscellaneous personal items such as passports and includes a few folders of notes she made of interesting ideas and facts.
Series II: Correspondence is arranged alphabetically by the name of the correspondent. Most of the correspondence is to or from Elizabeth but a small amount of correspondence of family members is included in this series. It also includes a few card files of addresses, notebooks that were used to keep a record of correspondence and one bound volume of letters. Much of this material can be cross-referenced to correspondents and material in other series, especially Series III: Activities and Interests.
Series III: Activities and Interests contains subject files. Included in this series is a variety of material from the many organizations Elizabeth participated in, and subjects on which she maintained an interest. These include institutions of the arts such as the Art Institute and Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, and numerous institutions in Aspen.
Series IV: Travel contains the itineraries, maps, guidebooks and various small souvenirs from Elizabeth's extensive travel. The material is arranged alphabetically by the name of the country or continent. Other items in this series include maps, photographs, brochures, ticket stubs, newspaper and magazine clippings and correspondence. There are a number of more unusual items as well, such as a fan and a set combs from Japan.
Series V: Nitze Family contains a variety of personal and family materials, often of sentimental value. Some short stories and skits by her mother, Anina Nitze (Mrs. William A. Nitze), are included, as are her father's honorary degrees. Additionally, there are materials related to Elizabeth's brother, Paul Nitze, that concern his diplomatic and political career. The contents are arranged alphabetically by the name of the family member, except for the materials relating to Henry Hilken, her maternal grandfather, which have been placed at the end.
Two smaller series are Series VI: Adlai Stevenson, and Series VII: Mortimer Adler. Adlai Stevenson was a lifelong friend whom Elizabeth met in 1916. This series contains copies of some of his speeches, correspondence, United Nations press releases, Elizabeth's handwritten notes, a medal and memorials. It also includes a small amount of material pertaining to the Adlai Stevenson Institute of International Affairs and a copy of the oral history that Elizabeth gave to the Oral History Collection at Columbia University. Mortimer Alder was also a lifelong friend. This series includes typescripts of Adler's autobiography, offprints of articles, correspondence, reading lists and instructions for moderators leading reading sessions of Great Books and other reading groups. Also, a number of Adler's speeches can be found here and an introduction of Adler by Elizabeth for his 80th birthday speech.
Series VIII: Photographs is divided into six subseries: Family; Social Events and Leisure Activities; Travel; Aspen; Aspen Institute, Goethe Festival, 7& Celebrities; and Miscellaneous. Many of the photographs are not labeled or dated. Other photographs may be found in other series, including additional travel photographs in Series IV: Travel. The date range for this series is 1912-1988.
Eight items are included in Series IX: Audio-Visual. Six of these are reel tapes containing speeches on architecture by the architect George Danforth. There is a cassette tape: "Freak Culture and Drugs," a speech given by Michael Aldrich at the International Design Conference in Aspen in 1971. The last two items are a pair of 78 RPM Discs labeled as Walter P. Paepcke, Jr.'s "favorite songs."
Series X: Awards, Plaques and Ephemera includes two subseries. The first, Awards and Plaques, contains awards, certificates and plaques given to Elizabeth by a number of groups for her involvement in the city of Aspen, the arts and a variety of other activities. The second subseries, Ephemera, includes an assortment of reproductions of artwork and original works. Some of these are Elizabeth's own creations and some by friends or family. The ephemera themselves vary greatly in type. The items range from decoupage greeting cards, to a zinc printing plate. Also included is an artists' book created as a memorial for Walter Paepcke from the Institute of Design and contains an original work by Lazlo Moholy-Nagy.
Series XI: Writings of Others, Newspaper and Magazine Clippings has been divided into two subseries. The first subseries, Writings, consists of writings by scholars, friends and relatives. It includes photocopies and reprints of articles, manuscripts and speeches. These items are arranged alphabetically by author. The second subseries contains many newspaper and magazine clippings. Other clippings are included in the other series. These clippings have been roughly arranged by subject and include subject headings such as art, Aspen, Chicago, Environment, Walter Paepcke, and Politics. Under the subject heading, Society, a handful of whole magazines have been preserved.
Series VII, Family Correspondence and Oversize, contains correspondence from members of the Paepcke and Nitze families dating from 1914-1922. It mostly consists of correspondence between Elizabeth Nitze and Walter Paepcke in the years leading up to their marriage and between Walter Paepcke and Anina Nitze, Elizabeth's mother. There are also letters between Elizabeth and Anina Nitze and some miscellaneous material, including oversize items.
Series XIII, Addenda, contains material that was added to the collection after the original portion was organized and made available to researchers. It has been organized to reflect the arrangement of the original portion of the collection, although not all of the original series are represented in the addenda. The majority of the addenda is personal material and correspondence, and it includes a significant amount of family correspondence. In many cases there are undated explanatory notes clipped to the material that were written and added by Elizabeth Paepcke's daughters after her death.
The Addenda is organized in seven subseries:
I. Personal
II. Correspondence
III. Travel
IV. Awards, Plaques, and Ephemera
V. Writings, Newspaper, and Magazine clippings
VI. Oversize
VII. Restricted

This series consists of materials related to Elizabeth Paepcke's social engagements and obligations, some records of her art collection, and lawsuits with which she was involved. In addition, there are two subseries about Albert Schweitzer and her husband, Walter Paepcke, which also includes material about her father-in-law, Herman Paepcke. Series I covers the dates 1889-1994. It has been divided into six subseries: Engagements, Calendars and Guest Books, Financial and Legal, Walter Paepcke, Albert Schweitzer, and General.
The first subseries, Engagements, contains records of some of the many social, cultural and political events Elizabeth attended. She gave many speeches and copies of some of these can be found in this subseries, including a speech she gave on July 7, 1974 at the 25th anniversary of the Goethe Bicentennial. Some of speeches are preserved as handwritten manuscripts. The subseries also contains correspondence, guest lists, brochures and invitations to speak. Also included in Subseries 1 is a tribute given to Elizabeth by many of her Aspen friends on the occasion of her 80th Birthday.
Related to subseries 1 is the second subseries, Calendars and Guest Books. This is a small subseries containing a few calendars on which Elizabeth kept note of her activities and a number of guest books from her home. The Guest books are fanciful, often handmade, books that visitors would sign. Paepcke's guests sometimes included an inscription or drawing with their name. One of the calendars, like a scrapbook, contained many smaller pieces. These pieces, including a wedding sixpence, were removed to another folder. Some of the guest books also included a few inserts that were placed in separate folders.
Subseries 3, Financial and Legal contains records of Elizabeth's art collection, which included works from artists such as Bayer, Calder, Chagall, Klee, Moholy-Nagy and Picasso. There are several appraisals and records of donations of artwork to the Art Institute and Museum of Contemporary Art. The legal section of the subseries includes legal materials from lawsuits that involved Elizabeth. These usually concern her Aspen properties or the Aspen Institute.
Subseries 4, Walter Paepcke, includes material related to Elizabeth's husband, Walter Paepcke and a small amount of material concerning his father, Hermann Paepcke. This material is some of the oldest in the collection, dating to 1889. Some of it relates to Paepcke-Leicht and the Chicago Mill and Lumber Company, which were predecessors of the Container Corporation of America. The subseries also includes a small amount of Walter's correspondence. Several of his honorary degrees can be found here with related programs, photos and newspaper clippings. There is also a list of Walter's honorary degrees written by Elizabeth. There are a number of memorials from various corporations and cultural institutions such as the Art Institute, the Aspen Institute, the Commercial Club of Chicago and the University of Chicago. A memorial artist's book dedicated to Walter Paepcke from the Illinois Institute of Design, which includes a drawing? By Lazlo Moholy-Nagy, has been placed in Series X: Awards, Plaques and Ephemera. The scrapbook, "We Go To the Party," concerns the opening of a pulp mill in Fernandina Florida by the Container Corporation of America.
Subseries 5, Albert Schweitzer, contains correspondence between Elizabeth and Schweitzer and correspondence with persons affiliated with him or the Binder-Schweitzer hospital. Date range for this correspondence is 1949-1975. Other materials of note in this subseries include a number of newspaper clippings about Schweitzer, a few photographs, and a wooden shoe that was given to her by F. Deikert (see letter); according to a letter that accompanied it, it was carved from a tree trunk that Schweitzer used to sit on. The shoe originally had a facsimile of one of Schweitzer's sermons rolled up inside it. Further information on Albert Schweitzer may be found in Subseries 4: Walter Paepcke, in the Correspondence.
Subseries 6, General, contains passports, notes of interesting ideas and facts, report cards from Foxcroft and a few miscellaneous family items. The notes are mostly handwritten, although a few are typed.

Series II: Correspondence |
Elizabeth was a regular and enthusiastic correspondent, and her correspondence is extensive. This series covers the period 1926-1994 but the heaviest concentration is from 1950 to 1980. The correspondence has been arranged alphabetically by the name of the correspondent.
There are several small sets of correspondence of Elizabeth's family members, including Walter Paepcke, A. P. Guenzel (aunt), Anina Nitze (mother), William A. Nitze (father), Anina Paepcke (daughter) and Paula Paepcke (daughter). These have been placed at the end of the series, as have Elizabeth's notebooks containing records of her correspondence, and the unidentified correspondence. Letters of condolence after the death of her husband, Walter, have been alphabetized separately and placed at the end of the series. Correspondence with family members is quite extensive, especially with her daughters, Anina, Paula and Antonia (Toni). This correspondence is alphabetized according to maiden and married names for each daughter.
In this series, there are a variety of nicknames used between Elizabeth and her correspondents. Most people use her nickname, "Pussy," but family members often address her as "Smoo" or "Smooie." Elizabeth sometimes used the nickname "Ianina" for her eldest daughter, Anina, and her husband Ian. Elizabeth and William "Bill" Moulis used a large variety of nicknames for each other. These include Alexandra or Carlotta on his part and Maximillian, Jack Headstrong and Boujma on her part. A complete list of the nicknames Elizabeth had for Moulis is included in his entry in the inventory below. Most nicknames are indicated in parentheses next to the full name of the correspondent.
A bound set of letters to given Elizabeth on her eightieth birthday have been placed at the end of the series.
This series does not contain all the correspondence; most of the other series contain additional correspondence.

Series III: Activities and Interests |
Series III: Activities and Interest is a large subject file. It has been arranged alphabetically by topic and then chronologically within the subjects, except for the Art Institute and Interior Design material, each of which is subdivided by subject. This series covers the period 1935-1993. Much of the material in this series is the correspondence and reports of the organizations, committees and boards of which Elizabeth was a member. Some subject files consist only of a folder or two while some are quite large. Many of them include newspaper and magazine clippings.
One particularly large subject file is the Aspen Institute for the Humanities. This part of Series III includes correspondence, reports, minutes, promotional materials, conference materials, notes, reading lists, newsletters, awards and article reprints. Some of the papers included in the Aspen Institute heading predate the actual formation of the institute in 1950. These few papers reveal some of the planning that went into the institute from the perspective of Walter and Elizabeth Paepcke. An effort has been made to keep together materials that were originally grouped together in folders and binders except when there was too much material to be included in one folder. This material includes meetings of the Executives' and Society of Fellows' seminars.
Related to the Aspen Institute is the Aspen Music Festival material. Originally affiliated directly with the Institute, the Aspen Music Festival and the Music Associates of Aspen organized a yearly festival of music in Aspen as well as a summer music school. This part of the series includes festival programs, brochures, minutes and correspondence, and it covers the period 1950-1993.
Elizabeth's concern for environmental matters is reflected by her involvement in the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES) and the affiliated Thorne Ecological Foundation. Elizabeth was a member of the board of advisors of the Thorne Ecological Foundation, which established a fund for the ACES in 1967 (to be used for operating and capital expenses. Elizabeth donated land from her Hallam Lake site in 1967 and made monetary donations money. ACES held nature classes, produced pamphlets, and newsletters on environmental issues. In addition to these materials, this part of Series III also contains correspondence and clippings.
The Great Books foundation was founded in 1947 in the context of a growing interest in sponsoring this public discussion of the Great Books, also termed the Great Ideas. It organized reading and discussion programs and published books to be used in these programs. Elizabeth was on the board of directors, resigning in 1981. Elizabeth and her husband Walter attended the Great Books classes in the late forties and Elizabeth remained interested in similar topics in part through her friendship with Mortimer Adler. As part of her interest in the great books, she collected general magazine articles and clippings that concerned public discussion of the Great Books programs. These include programs affiliated with Mortimer Adler and Robert Maynard Hutchins. Other material includes notes, minutes, financial statements, memos, correspondence, booklets, the newsletter, "The Gadfly," and material from the Junior Great Books Program. There are also some photos from telecasts of Great Books classes that included Elizabeth.
The Institute of Design, originally the Chicago School of Design, was sometimes referred to as the "New Bauhaus." Elizabeth's was a particular admirer of modern art and design, and she encouraged her husband's sponsorship of the Institute and patronage of the arts. The Institute of Design material includes reproductions of Walter's early correspondence concerning the Institute. There are also two issues of the Student Independent, which include prints of Institute students' work.
The material on Interior design has been subdivided into several categories. Elizabeth attended the School of the Art Institute and was involved in a number of design projects and enjoyed occasional interior design projects. She kept a large amount of design material including catalogs, advertisements, samples and clippings. There is also a small amount of correspondence from the American Institute of Interior Designers and the American Society of Interior Designers. One of the projects she contributed to was a redesign of portions of the Marshall Field's department store, and another was the design of dormitory rooms in the University of Chicago's International House.
In addition to this design project, Elizabeth was also involved in University of Chicago activities as a member of the Women's Board and the Visiting Committee on the Humanities. This portion of Series III includes correspondence, speeches by University of Chicago faculty, copies of the University of Chicago magazine, a list of the president's honor roll, and convocation programs. Her involvement in the University of Chicago also developed from her friendship with Robert Maynard Hutchins and her father's years in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures.
Other items of note in Series III include the Lincoln Academy, the University of Denver and the Thorne Ecological Foundation. Elizabeth was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Lincoln Academy in 1964. Modeled after the Nobel Prize, the Lincoln Academy is intended to recognize the achievements and contributions of Illinois citizens by conferring the Lincoln Medal Awards. Elizabeth served on the Board, attended meetings and the annual ball, but left the Board dissatisfied. This section includes correspondence, minutes, photographs, notes, programs, and invitations. Elizabeth was also on the Board of Trustees of the University of Denver. This material includes notes, correspondence, and commencement programs. Elizabeth's involvement in the Thorne Ecological
Foundation is part of her interest in Environmental issues. The material consists of a certificate of incorporation, bylaws, correspondence, minutes, brochures, memoranda and "A Treatise on Environmental Values" by Robert O. Lee. Much of the Container Corporation material from 1985-1986 concerns the exhibit "Art, Design, and the Modern Corporation" at the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Material related to the company Marcor is also included after the Container Corporation material because the two merged in 1968.

Series IV: Travel |
Series IV: Travel contains a variety of materials from Elizabeth Paepcke's travels. It is arranged alphabetically by the name of the country or continent. Elizabeth enjoyed traveling and traveled extensively, especially in the late sixties and the seventies. Sometimes she traveled with groups such as the Women's Board of the Field Museum or on cruises. This series includes the large array of materials generated by these expeditions, which range in date from 1937-1988. The notebooks she kept for the trip to China include dates from both 1964 and 1975-1976, and it is unclear when she visited this country or if she visited it twice.
Much of the material, postcards, for example, is the same kind that any traveler would collect on a trip. Other material of this kind includes maps, photographs, brochures, small guide books for museums or other cultural attractions, ticket stubs, and correspondence. Trips sponsored particular organizations sometimes produced less conventional material, such as trips affiliated with the Aspen Institute and meetings they held abroad. These materials incorporate lectures and meeting notes. Another example would be her trip to Egypt in 1962 with the University of Chicago Women's Board. Other materials include a speech Elizabeth gave to the Scribblers' Club about her 1961 trip to Greece, which was affiliated with the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions. Also, Elizabeth would sometimes keep unusual fabric or a fan and set of combs (Japan) from her trips. Some of the countries listed in the inventory may not be countries she actually visited, but was considering visiting and so gathered information about them. Elizabeth would collect newspaper and magazine articles about the areas she visited, and these are interspersed in the material below. There are a number of travel notebooks and scrapbooks.
A journal from the 1955 trip to Germany includes a loose-leaf journal that is not written in Elizabeth's handwriting. At the end of the series is a small amount of material about Linblad Travel, the travel agency with which Elizabeth did business.

Series V: Nitze Family |
Series V: Nitze Family contains a varied collection of materials associated with Elizabeth's parents and family. This series covers the period 1928-1991. Much of the material is personal or items which held sentimental value, such as wedding announcements, correspondence and a few family photos. Her mother, Anina Nitze (Mrs. William A. Nitze) occasionally wrote short stories and skits, some of which are included here. Her father's honorary degrees are included, as well as a few of his writings. Included are materials related to Elizabeth's brother, Paul Nitze, and concern his diplomatic and political career. Other materials related to Paul Nitze include a wedding invitation, trip itinerary, and a reprint of a University of Chicago Magazine article. The game board at the end of the series is in German. The folders are arranged alphabetically by the name of the family member, except for the materials relating to Henry Hilken, which have been placed at the end.
