Biographical Note

This collection contains the papers of Lester Condit, born 1893 in King’s Creek, Ohio. Upon completing his undergraduate studies at Miami University in 1917, he went on to work at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington for eight years. During that time he received his master’s degree from Ohio State University in 1925 and went on to complete his PhD from the Graduate Library School at the University of Chicago with the thesis “Studies in Roman Printing Type of the 15th Century.” Along with the Library of Congress, he held numerous positions at The New York Public Library in 1926, the John Crerar Library from 1926-1927, Newberry Library from 1929-1931, and the Henry E. Huntington Library from 1931-1933. This collection contains his research and writings on incunabula and library management, as well as various correspondence related to World War II. This material would be of interest to any researchers in the field of library science and history, as well as those interested in the history of the University of Chicago’s Graduate Library School.
