A "Proposal for the establishment of a Center for Comparative Education at the University of Chicago" was drawn up in July 1956. The next year, the Ford Foundation gave a grant for the Center, which opened on July 1, 1958. The Center was interdisciplinary in its faculty and its scope. And its first director was C. Arnold Anderson, a professor of education and sociology. Other early faculty included Robert J. Havighurst (Education and Human Development), Herman G. Richey (Education), and Mary Jean Bowman (Economics). The early mission of the Center was to create a cross-cultural foundation for the maturing branches of educational research.
The Comparative Education Center Records consist of the Center's Annual Reports from 1959 to 1977.
