Abstract:

Cedric L. Chernick (1931-2009) was a science administrator at Argonne National Laboratory and the University of Chicago. He developed the Searle Scholars Program for chemical, biomedical, and medical research. This collection consists of photo negatives of University officers as well as materials from the University of Chicago Committee on Social Thought and the John M. Olin Center for the Inquiry into the Theory and Practice of Democracy.

Biographical Note

Cedric L. Chernick was born on November 2, 1931 in Manchester, England. He received his B.Sc. M.Sc. and PhD from Manchester University in chemistry. He joined the staff at Argonne National Laboratory in 1959. There he conducted research on noble gases. Throughout his career with Argonne and the University of Chicago he served in administrative roles. He and his wife Judy were also resident heads of the residential hall of Lower Rickert House from 1972-1979. Chernick left the University of Chicago in 1980 and worked to develop the Searle Scholars Program. Chernick died on April 2, 2009 in Chicago.

Scope Note

This collection consists of photo negatives of University officers. It also includes newspapers clippings and articles related to the University of Chicago Committee on Social Thought, particularly professors Saul Bellow and Allan Bloom, as well as materials related to the John M. Olin Center for the Inquiry into the Theory and Practice of Democracy.
