The Council on Anthropology and Education emerged out of the funding for area studies and the development of the Program in the Anthropology and Education directed by Frederick O. Gearing. The program coordinated its members out of the American Anthropological Association, rather than just one university, and it brought together scholars interested in studying schools as organizations in modern or modernizing societies, people interested in community studies and those documenting the professionalization of teachers.
The involvement of Murray Wax (chairman 1968-69), who conducted an intensive study in schools on the Pine Ridge Reservation, helped move the program toward becoming the, "Council on Anthropology and Education." Wax assisted in drafting the constitution which prevented any one university from dominating the council but did allow for large academic contributions from schools such as Columbia University and the University of Chicago.
Series I contains correspondence and reports documenting the actions and leadership of the CAE. Correspondents include Jacquetta Burnett, Frederick O. Gearing, Dell Hymes, Margret Mead, John Singleton, and Harry F. Wolcott.
Series II contains materials presented at meetings of the American Anthropological Association. Included here is Murray Wax's, "Paper on the Founding and Early History of the CAE," in which he described the early influences and roots of the CAE from his personal perspective. Additionally, this category contains Wax's drafts of the constitution and material compiled in 1992 to document the organization's history.
Series III, General Files, includes files on research subjects, grant materials, and reports.
