Margaret Bevington was a long-time teacher at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools nursery, a job she held for 30 years, eventually becoming head teacher. She attended Radcliffe College, the former women's liberal arts college in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she earned a bachelor's degree in English in 1954. The next year, she earned a master's degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
